A light installation inspired by the night sky.

In a 20 x 20m space, we created a dark room with a canopy full of lights. Visitors could walk in in complete darkness and watch the lights appear slowly. In the center of the room there was a cluster of interactive light globes. Users could reach up for them and they would come down to their hands.

Everything was controlled by a custom software written in C++ with OpenFrameworks.

The scale of the installation and the number of servos and lights involved made it quite difficult to test everything in one place. We decided to create a 3D simulation of our setup, which proved helpful not only for development, but also for monitoring the live installation from the backstage.

We had also 5 DSLR cameras on the canopy to capture people’s reactions when they reached up.

LIVE PERFORMANCE

For the first night of the installation in New York, Stella invited John Legend to perform live for a small audience.

Watch John Legend - Under The Stars on YouTube.

We wrote an extension to the software exclusively for this concert. It allowed us play predefined animations and to make the lights react to the music in real time. We also created a simple remote control with TouchOSC so we could be in the room during the performance and control everything from there.

NEW YORK & BUENOS AIRES

We started with just a few kinetic lights in our basement, then moved to a photo studio in East London and then shipped everything to New York to finally install everything in full scale. After the event in New York was finished, we shipped everything to Buenos Aires and did it again.
